Recently an Indian cricket league introduced cheerleaders in an effort to add entertainment value to their games. Because cheerleading is a new phenomenon in India and thus there is relatively little homegrown talent, the league has brought in cheerleaders from around the world to cheer at games, including those from the Washington Redskins. It seems like it would be a great thing that more people are being introduced to cheerleading, but things are not going well. Although, in a country where Richard Gere was threatened with jail time for publicly kissing an Indian actress on the cheek, it is perhaps not surprising that some are decrying the cheerleaders’ outfits and routines as “vulgar and obscene.” However, supporters counter that the outfits are not any worse than those worn in Bollywood films. Things have been personally difficult for the cheerleaders as well, as they have had to deal with harassment from the crowds. “It’s been horrendous,” Tabitha, a cheerleader from Uzbekistan, told an Indian newspaper. “Wherever we go we do expect people to pass lewd, snide remarks but I’m shocked by the nature and magnitude of the comments people pass here.” It will be interesting to watch how this East vs. West culture clash plays out, and whether cheerleading will end up being banned there.
